Our Trip to Party with Degrassi NJ

On Saturday, February 18th, the Degrassi Experience had the extreme pleasure of attending the final Party with Degrassi event in Montclair NJ. We were also incredibly honored to be attending the event as press, which gave us the opportunity to interview the cast. Pulling up to the Wellmont Theater and seeing all the fans in line was a pretty amazing picture. Alex and I were eager to start interviewing the crowd and meet up with all of our twitter and tumblr buddies. Camera in hand, we began learning more about all the super-fans that had lined up to party with Degrassi.  Some of these fangirls and boys had camped out since the night before, others got there in the early morning. Up and down the line we went talking to some hilarious and friendly folks. We got to meet people from all across the U.S. and a few that lived right in Montclair. Some fans came bearing gifts: cards, flowers, and even a toy pig. Others made signs or shirts adorned with characters and quotes. Alex and I got to belt out the theme song with fans, take pictures with so many awesome people we met and even saw a pizza get ordered to the line! Here are some super cute pics we got with some fans:

At 1:00, Alex and I entered the Wellmont for the press session to begin. After some waiting, and a minute or two to prep our camera and questions, we started interviews. The cast came over in groups of one or two and gave us some thrilling hints to what is in store in the new episodes. We also asked a few fan submitted questions to the cast and got back some interesting answers. Each week the Degrassi Experience will be uploading a new cast interview for you guys to enjoy, so keep an eye out for some new content. We already knew the members of the Degrassi cast were bound to be great people since everyone at Epitome is, but we never expected them to be so kind and friendly to all of the fans and press at the event. They were honestly some of the sweetest people we have ever met…and everyone was even cuter in person! Who knew that was even possible!? After a truly rewarding interview session, the Degrassi Experience got to explore the fun and games set up at the event. We made Degrassi shirts, won some prizes, and indulged in some Degrassi-themed drinks. The “Eclare on the Rocks” was our particular favorite.

Once all the fans were let in, we took our seats, met up with some of our new friends and waited eagerly for the cast to take the stage. Explosive applause filled the room at the sight of the cast. They answered some questions and then introduced the premiere episode. I won’t give away any spoilers for those who haven’t seen it yet, but I will say you are in for a treat! Stay tuned for an episode review from these two crazy gals! After the episode ended, the cast reunited onstage for some final questions and a special happy birthday for Melinda Shankar who turned twenty. The cast said their goodbyes, as did we, to the friends and fans we had met there. The day was a so rewarding and full of some of the most exhilarating moments of our lives. We are so grateful to the cast, the event staff, Epitome, and all the remarkable people we met while at the Degrassi party event. Keep checking for new Degrassi Experience vlogs and material, as we have some great stuff on the way. Also, get ready for the return of Degrassi, because you know New Beginnings is going to get real.

Degrassi Transmigration

Season after season, fans are captivated by new generations of students and their stories.  As the viewer, you are on the other side, peering into the dramatic bubble that is Degrassi Community School.  Over the years, you may develop strong affiliations with the characters as you learn more about them, and how their character’s life may relate to your own.  One of the beautiful parts of the Degrassi saga, is that it depicts the stories of stereotypical teenagers.  Not necessarily out of this world whack jobs (with the exception of one Imogen Moreno) that you’d NEVER find in a typical high school setting, but the real sub groups of teens you might see walking around your own high school.
From the beginning of a Degrassi school year, new characters are introduced as one extreme personality; completely reminiscent of whatever stereotype they are representing in a population of high schoolers.  According to former Degrassi star Charlotte Arnold, the characters become more dimensional over a period of time, and their personalities are written more toward the direction of the actor’s personality, giving the character more depth.  For example, Holly J went from former ice queen, HBIC, to a maternal, understanding, less stable, terminally ill Holly J!  The girl did a complete 360 during her high school years.  I think it’s safe to say that Degrassi characters pretty much ALWAYS end up becoming the complete opposite, or drastically different, from what they started as.

 Clare Edwards

Clare started out her niner days as an overly conservative, disciplined, slightly awkward young lady who once exclaimed, and I quote, “school is for learning.”  These days, we’ve seen a new side of Clare Edwards.  From neck biting, having a relationship with an unstable goth, to dating her step brother, her character has definitely done a 360!  The sudden change in Clare didn’t just come out of nowhere.  The recent events in her life have all added to her character’s “flaws.”  Dealing with the finalization of her parent’s divorce, a tragic break up with your first love, and a traumatic experience with a Clare-obsessed Fitzy will definitely do it!

Holly J. Sinclair

Holly J Sinclair entered Degrassi as a transfer from Lakehurst after the tragic fire.  Sister of Heather Sinclair, captain of the cheer squad, contender for student body president, HJ was definitely a force to be reckoned with.  Former ice queen, famous for the “I Hate Holly J” scandal (one of the few incidents we actually appreciated Alli Bhandari for) turned softy toward the end of her reign at Degrassi.  Of course she remained student body pres, an active leader with a bright Yale impeded future…but HJ went through some MAJOR changes over the years.  Let’s be real here, the girl used to verbally abuse her BFF Anya, and tortured students like Mia for being a teen mother.  The HJ we know in later seasons is still an HBIC, but she’s warm and nurturing…she has a heart.  What melted those ice caps?  Perhaps her family’s decline in socioeconomic status?  Perhaps it was the fatal kidney disease she was faced with during her senior year, and oh yes, that little incident where she found out she was ADOPTED!

Anya McPherson

Former minion of Holly J Sinclair, Anya began her days at Degrassi a lost bird.  She couldn’t really stand on her own two feet, and she didn’t really know who she was for a while…as a matter of fact..neither did we!  Does anyone remember that time Anya had dyslexia?  For a hot minute in Perino’s class, and the lovely Holly J made fun of her for it!  I actually think that was something we would’ve enjoyed seeing more of, but as Anya’s character developed more, we got to know her as the dependable good girl.  Good grades…good morals…good crank addictions.  Wait, what?!  Oh yeah, that’s right!  Good girl-gone bad, McPherson did a TOTAL 360 in her senior year of high school.  The girl hooked up with Degrassi’s bad-boy gone softy, Owen Milligan, picked up a couple of skanky friends, and sent her future up her nose. That’s right!  And let’s not forget her rendezvous with Dr. Chris, (who now resides somewhere in Africa…probably accompanied by Darcy Edwards) her mother’s doctor!  Could Anya’s mother’s cancer be to blame for her sudden plummet?  Did the cold shoulder she received from Dr. Chris push her off the edge?  All we have to say is…”Saving Private McPherson”…who saw THAT one coming?!

A little Drianca...a little Krew...WAIT DRIANCA?! Is Drew falling for Bee again? Should Katie be worried???

Alex Steele, who plays niner Tori, seems to be a little shocked by SOMEONE’S rather colorful appearance…a little Maya Matlin gone crayola?

We came across this cute pic in an article about the cute hippy van joining the Epitome family.

Find the article here.

After a little Degrassi Private Investigating, we discovered that Meghan Heffern’s character would be mixing things up in Cake World!

What do you guys think? Will this be the true test for Clare and Jake? Perhaps she’s just…an old friend?

We’re going to give a big “YEAH RIGHT!”  It’s Degrassi.  It goes there. May the best man win!
